Project size can be defined based on the efforts / Team size. Large Projects are typically where the efforts are in the range of around 120 to 1000 Person Days, having team size greater than 10.

Managing large projects is not just delivering defined scope, within budget, by the deadlines. It is like orchestrating an outstanding performance where everything just works together and it feels right. You are one with the performance. It’s about managing several challenges at the same time and at all times. It's about propelling a purposeful momentum in the team.

Good technical skills, people management skills are not enough and it is not enough to have a delighted customer. To be successful, a project must be profitable. The Project Manager therefore has to think and act, like a Business Manager.

This paper demonstrates the techniques and methodologies that can help you manage your projects in more efficient way. It highlights various challenges/problems and the solutions to address each of the problems.

The paper would add most value to Project Managers, Delivery Managers and Business leaders.

The techniques and methodologies demonstrated in this paper have been successfully applied to one of the large projects at KPIT Cummins Infosystems. This project initially started with customer outsourcing low complexity maintenance work to offshore. The customer engagement started in July 2002 with 6 people team. It has now grown up to a 100 people team doing high end development and enhancement work. 90% of the work is done at offshore. The project is mission critical software for the customer. The quality demands are very high as the stakes are high. The delivery dates are pinned down even with unavoidable dynamic changes.

The customer Executive Director quotes on accomplishment of one of the critical milestone — “This is great news! I am so pleased to see the continued focus of the team in delivering to our commitments. We have significantly improved our overall capabilities over the last three years and this milestone reinforces that we are producing consistent results. We are doing what we say we will do.”
